5 easy ways to stay fit during the holidays

Our guests often tell us that staying fit during their vacations, especially during the holidays can be a challenge.  Our Wellness team got together to help with some tips on how you can still indulge your taste buds (even if you’re on vacation surrounded by fabulous restaurants) while staying healthy and looking great.

Portion control

Portion control is as simple as eating smaller portions. Yes, absolutely enjoy your favorite dishes and desserts. If you’re dining out, order with the mindset that you’ll take home leftovers. This lets you enjoy the meal as a healthy portion with the bonus that you can enjoy it again tomorrow as leftovers. If you opt for a dessert, consider sharing it with someone else -- you get the taste, but not all the calories. If you’re at home, it’s just as easy to eat smaller portions with the added satisfaction that leftovers you can enjoyed the next day as they are or even repurposed into a new recipe such as taking leftover steak and combining it with vegetables for a delicious stir fry.

Schedule time to workout

It can be oh-so-tempting to skip out on a workout especially during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. However, it really is fairly easy to make just a little time for fitness in your day. The secret is to commit to yourself by scheduling your workout just as you would an appointment or meeting. It doesn’t have to be a full hour and it doesn’t have to be a heavy workout. A quick 20-minute weight session or 20-minute online Pilates video can keep your body in shape and the added endorphin release will keep your spirits up!

If you are staying with us at Bucuti & Tara this holiday season, we invite you to join our wellness program. Dynamic instructors teach a variety of classes that are adjusted to skill level. Commit just one hour and spend the rest of the day relaxing and eating that dessert and drinking that cocktail without feeling guilty.

Look for healthy holiday dishes

The internet is a treasure trove of healthy holiday dishes treats. You can make delicious Christmas meals that are healthy and low in calories. There are also many substitutions so you can enjoy your favorite recipes in good-for-you versions such as healthier substitutes for sugar in treats.

When dining, many restaurants highlight delicious healthy dishes on their menu. Our Elements menu focuses on delicious healthy choices so that you do not have to feel like you are missing out. For added control, opt to have your sauce or dressing served on the side or ask to replace side dishes for healthier ones such as swapping French fries for a side salad or steamed vegetables.

Get some movement in every day

Let’s get moving! Sitting down is hard on our bodies. The less time spent sitting down, the better. Find creative ways to be active. Dance to holiday music as you clean or work on projects, get your heart rate up by building a snowman or if you’re on Aruba, walk on the beach or take a dip in the ocean. Anything works, some activity is always better than none.

Maintain a healthy sleeping routine

Sleep is important for optimizing your awake time. Lack of sleep causes your hormones off balance, which will make you crave sugary and fatty foods, which results in a sluggish feeling. Lack of sleep also makes you less motivated to move your body.To maintain a healthy sleeping routine, plan for 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. It also helps to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. You’ll be amazed at the clarity, energy and positive attitude you’ll feel the next day.

Of course, the most important thing during the holidays is that you have fun! To enjoy it to the fullest, give yourself the gift of taking care of your health.

Happy holidays from all of us at the Bucuti & Tara
